The Artist Support Pledge (ASP) is a global initiative founded by artist Matthew Burrows MBE in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally launched as a way to support artists during lockdown, the pledge has since grown into a worldwide movement that promotes a fair, equitable, and sustainable creative economy for artists and makers of all backgrounds, media, and ethnicities.
At its core, the Artist Support Pledge is built on generosity and community. It operates primarily through Instagram, the leading platform for artists to showcase their work. To participate, artists post images of their artwork using the hashtag #artistsupportpledge, along with details and a price (no more than £220, or the equivalent in local currency). Buyers can contact the artist directly via direct message (DM) to make a purchase—no gatekeeping, no application process, and open to everyone.
Once an artist reaches £1,100 in sales, they commit to spending £220 on work by another artist—thus supporting others in the creative community and keeping the cycle of giving and receiving alive.
The Artist Support Pledge isn’t just about selling art; it’s about fostering a culture of generosity, equality of opportunity, and shared values within the global art ecosystem. It provides an accessible and inclusive platform where artists can connect, support each other, and build resilience together.
ASP believes that creating a sustainable future—economically, culturally, and environmentally—begins with rethinking the values we live by. Artists play a vital role in this dialogue. When one part of the creative ecosystem suffers, we all do. Supporting each other is not only powerful—it’s essential.
